Planet of the Apps is a reality television show where software developers are tasked to pitch their ideas in front of judges on a slow-moving escalator. Winners will get funding directly from LSVP. The show premiered on June 6, 2017 to mixed reviews.
While some people complain that iTunes does too much and is bloated, it’s still a fast, efficient, and well organised media library. The movie and TV areas feel somewhat underdeveloped compared to music, but elsewhere iTunes excels. As a place to keep your music collection, it’s reliable and really useful. With the addition of Apple Music, iTunes is pretty much the complete package.
Apple Music’s major redesign in iOS 10 received more positive reviews. Caitlin McGarry of Macworld praised Apple for having “cleaned up the clutter, reconsidered the navigation tools, put your library front and center, and added algorithmically created playlists to rival Spotify’s.” She noted bigger fonts, large amounts of white space, and she welcomed changes to various functionalities, concluding with the statement that “Apple Music’s redesign is a huge improvement over its previous incarnation, and a clear sign that Apple is listening to its customers”. However, another Macworld editor, Oscar Raymundo, criticized the new design, writing that “Apple Music in iOS 10 is not as elegant or intuitive as Apple promised. The music service added more needless options, key actions like repeat got buried, and the For You section leaves a lot to be desired”. Jordan Novet of VentureBeat wrote positively about the changes, stating “Apple has improved the overall design, as well as the experience”.
In my personal psychology, the question is whether a service feels like ownership. I have subscribed to Rhapsody for 12 years. Although outright song purchases are available on the platform, I rarely buy anything. But I feel like I own millions of tracks; I can listen to them anytime, anywhere. It’s similar to cable TV, but a heck of a lot cheaper and much more customizable.
The desktop version of iTunes gives the impression that Apple’s interests have largely transitioned elsewhere; that it would rather deal directly with iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs, and that it values apps and services more highly than movie and music sales. While this may make financial sense for the company in the long run, it’s a disappointing feeling for those who feel left behind.
I bought this $40 itunes packet by mistake. I was buying a gift for a teenager and it should have been a PS4 card instead. Bought off Amazon and was told cannot br returned. Never used and never removed from package. Free shipping.
For years, subscription services like Rhapsody were scorned as “music rental” by outspoken critics. They had a point. If your subscription lapsed, you lost access and the money you had spent on it. You didn’t wholly own music through subscription streaming services, but it felt like you owned it. Even so, the “celestial jukebox” concept (on-demand streaming of a huge catalog) was a hard sell to the broad market.
